Welcome to Green Livelihoods

Aside from hydrogen, biofuel and solar, there are some other opportunities for youth in the “green occupations” at C4L.

Recycling

This is becoming big business as the problem of waste looms large. In South Africa, littering is notoriously practiced by too many people.

Carbon sequester

Specifically, C4L has been promoting Spekboom. It botanical name is portalucaria afra. It is an indigenous plant in South Africa, that captures carbon ten-times faster than any other plant known on the planet. It is basically an air-cleaner. We grow “mother trees” at the C4L campus.

Rainwater harvesting

C4L promotes this plumbing or roofing function of installing gutters and downpipes. Water should be conserved in cisterns, sometimes called Jo-Jo’s.

The level of water retention overall in South Africa is low, not just on rooftops but in terms of terracing and damming up streams and rivers. Rooftops are largely an untapped resource in this respect.

Erosion Control

C4L promotes Vetiver grass for contour-planting. We grow “mother plants” on our campus.

Any and all of the above are suitable opportunities for micro-enterprise. Youth are equipped and enabled to start enterprises in the “green occupations”.
